Coaching is not training
Training gives you the method: how to open a meeting, find the pain, qualify a deal. Coaching is what happens after, when someone looks at your actual Thursday meeting and says “you presented before you knew who signs”. Most of what sellers learn in training is lost within weeks unless someone coaches them to use it.
In a sales team, that someone is the manager. Tobias Ahlin had that at Splunk and Snowflake: weekly deal reviews, someone asking the uncomfortable question about the champion. A founder selling alone has none of it.
What a good coaching session covers
- Deal review. Go through one live deal with MEDDPICC. What do you know, what are you guessing, what is the next question?
- Conversation review. What did you say when the buyer pushed back? What would you say next time?
- Roleplay. Rehearse the next meeting out loud, with the coach playing the hardest version of the buyer.
- One habit. Agree on one thing to do differently this week, and check it next time.
Signs you need coaching
- You send proposals that get no answer.
- You discount to close, and you're not sure why.
- Your pipeline is full of maybes that never move.
- You give demos before you know what the problem costs.
- You know what you should do, and in the meeting you don't do it.
Three ways to get coached when you sell alone
| Option | Good at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|
| Human sales coach | Reading you, confidence, long term habits | Availability, cost, and coverage between sessions |
| Peer review | Free, honest, regular if you book it | Your peer may not know a method any better than you |
| AI sales coach | Always there before a call, endless roleplay, consistent method | Only knows what you tell it, can't read the room |
How Allin coaches
Allin Sales Brain does the parts of coaching that need to happen between sessions: it reviews your deals with MEDDPICC, roleplays your next meeting, and gives you a “How you did” review that names your weakest reply. It is built on Tobias Ahlin's own method, so the feedback is the same on Monday as on Friday.
